What a great day for our SBS Hamilton Half Marathon events and Earthcare Environmental Kid’s Marathon.
After an overcast start and cool conditions, even the sun came out to welcome home runners and walkers and stayed to greet race winners and spot prize winners.
I want to say a big thank you to all the runners, walkers and children who took part in our event and register my appreciation to all volunteers, marshals and helpers who helped to make the day such a resounding success.
Despite having to change the course due to a major slip on the river path, the new country route found favour with many runners. It’s great to have positive feedback.

The SBS Bank Hamilton Half Marathon will operate from its new headquarters at Flagstaff Park, Commodore Ave, Flagstaff, for the second year. It ties in with the event's scenic and challenging riverside course.
The new headquarters offers convenient parking, is ideal for athlete registration and the start/finish line is right on hand.
The river course for the feature event takes in a loop of Harrowfield before heading south on River Rd, using riverside paths where possible. It crosses to the west side of the river over Victoria Bridge and follows the river north, takes in a detour through Braithwaite Park, crosses over the Sewer Bridge by Alandale, and heads back to Flagstaff Park and the finish.
Competitors in the 10km and 5km events will take in river paths and some of Hamilton’s beautiful northern parks.
Pace runners will be on hand to help half marathon runners reach their goal times.
Organisers have this year designed a new alternate course for all categories in case of floods or slips on the Waikato River banks. The alternative, all weather course takes athletes into the countryside north of Hamilton - away from potential hazards and weather driven events. (Both courses are illustrated on this web site).
Earthcare Environmental is continuing as naming rights sponsor for this year’s Kids Marathon. Earthcare Environmental are keen supporters of the great outdoors and we’re delighted to have them running alongside us and the children.
Last year’s Kids Marathon was a great success, with a huige number of children getting up, active and taking part. This unique event offers kids from 5-18 years a chance to complete a marathon, one kilometre at a time in the lead up to the 2011 SBS Bank Hamilton Half Marathon. They finish with a final 2.195km run within Flagstaff Park, along the actual half marathon course.
This year organisers are aiming to attract 500 youngsters to the event with the assistance of Kelly Sports.
